Failures in Product Management and How to deal with them!

When thinking about failure, two quotes from Henry Ford that resonate well with me are:

  1. “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

  2. “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely.”

To Err is Human. Here are some tips and insights from my experience on Failures in Product Management:

  1. Have a Fear of Failure: Embrace it as a tool that keeps you vigilant and adaptable. Whenever you’re planning or making decisions, always be aware of potential modes and reasons for failure.

  2. Failure is not the End: It’s an opportunity to retrospect, learn, improve, and do better next time. You’ll become more resilient and confident in handling future problems.

  3. Learn from Others: Study the failures of others, both internally within the company and externally (Competitors, Trends
).

  4. Transparency is Key: When things don’t go as planned, don’t try to cover it up or hide it. Own it and be transparent with your team and stakeholders. It shows you’re responsible and helps build trust. Plus, they can also contribute and help you. Successfully managing and navigating a failure will enhance your credibility.

  5. Complex Causes: Recognize that failure is usually a result of multiple factors. Try to examine the context in which the failure happened instead of blaming individuals.

  6. Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Sometimes, it’s good to quickly build and test five things and have five insights (positive or negative) at the end of the quarter than having all your eggs in one basket. Depending on the stage of your company and the team, use your judgment as a PM on what to do.

  7. Challenge Yourself: If you’re not failing every now and then, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough.
